Amazing Facts about Jellyfish

Amazing Facts about Jellyfish

1. Jellyfish first appeared about 650 million years ago and are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea. Some are also found in fresh water

2. A group of jellyfish is called a bloom or swarm

3. Jellyfish do not have a respiratory system since their skin is thin enough that the body is oxygenated by diffusion

4. Jellyfish do not have a brain or central nervous system, but rather have a loose network of nerves, located in the epidermis, which is called a “nerve net.”

5. Jellyfish are composed of more than 90% water. Most of their umbrella mass is a gelatinous material (the jelly) called mesoglea, which is surrounded by two layers of cells which forms the umbrella (top surface). The subumbrella (bottom surface) of the body is known as the bell

6. Jellyfish are dioecious; that is, they are either male or female. In most cases, to reproduce, both males and females release sperm and eggs into the surrounding water, where the (unprotected) eggs are fertilized and mature into new organisms

7. Box jellyfish venom is the most deadly in the animal kingdon and has caused at least 5,568 recorded deaths since 1954. Each tentacle has about 500,000 sindasites which are harpoon shaped needles that inject venom into the victim

8. The lion’s mane jellyfish is the largest known species of jellyfish. The Arctic Lion’s mane jellyfish is one of the longest known animals and the largest recorded specimen had a bell (body) with a diameter of 2.3 m (7 feet 6 inches) and the tentacles reached 36.5 m (120 feet). It was found washed up on the shore of Massachusetts Bay in 1870

An Unusual Beetle Golden Turtle

An Unusual Beetle Golden Turtle

An Unusual Beetle Golden Turtle,Beetle Golden Turtle (Charidotella sexpunctata) is highly distributed in North America. Insect sizes only 5-7 mm in length and has a golden color of the shell.

The golden tortoise beetle is a very dazzling beetle. elders are about one-fourth inch long, circular in shape with a flattening ridge bordering the body, concealing the head and legs much like a tortoise. What is notable about the adult golden tortoise beetle is the color. In spring and summer, the beetles earn their name when they turn the color of brilliant liquid gold. The color is generated by an optical illusion; the external cuticle is transparent and reflects light through a layer of liquid over the next layer of cuticle. The beetles change color depending on the availability of the liquid layer. In the fall and winter, the beetles become less bright and are more orange and bronze with flashes of iridescent color. If you try and collect the beetle for an insect collection, the beetle soon turns dark brown as is dries, loosing the golden color. The beetles are most beautiful left alive.

Amazing Information about Woodpeckers

There are more than 200 species of woodpeckers scattered all over the world. Woodpeckers are able to drill holes in the bark and wood of trees in search of insects. Woodpeckers have very long tongues which they use to capture their prey.

Woodpeckers have predominantly white, black and brown, green and red plumage. Woodpeckers have a pair of firm and centrally located tail feathers that supports and keeps them upright on trees. A very thick skull and squashy bone protects the brain of woodpeckers from shocks caused by persistent pecking behavior.

Stubbly and coarse feathers over their nostrils help woodpeckers to ward off wood flakes created by pecking. Both parents engage in the incubation of young ones, who are born naked and blind. All woodpeckers fly in a typical pattern, with three flaps followed by a single glide.

Woodpeckers create new holes every year. Thus, old cavities drilled by them are used by other hole-nesting species such as starlings, chickadees, owls, and squirrels.

Amazing facts about White Tiger

Amazing facts about White Tiger

 Scientific Name: Panthera tigris

The white tiger (also known as the Bengal tiger) is about 3 meters long, and weighs approximately 180-285 kg (400-569 LB). It’s coat lies flatter than that of the Siberian tiger, the tawny color is richer and the stripes are darker. White tigers are white colored Bengals, they are not albinos and they are not a separate subspecies of tigers.

They have blue eyes, a pink nose, and creamy white furr covered with chocolate colored stripes. White tigers are born to tigers that carry the unusual gene needed for white coloring. The White Tiger is a good swimmer, but a very poor climber. They may be slow runners, but they are stealthy enough to catch any prey in their sights. Because they are solitary animals, they mostly hunt at night.
It is belief that if you are born in the Chinese year of the tiger you are unusually lucky. Let’s hope that some of this luck rubs off on the white tiger before it’s too late. Let's try to protect and preserve their existence on earth.

Amazing facts about Hamsters

Amazing facts about Hamsters

Hamsters are native to Syria and were primarily used for research. They are of crepuscular nature, i.e. most active during twilight. Normally, they have a stout body with strong legs and wide feet. They have cheek pouches on either side of their heads falling to their shoulders, which they use to store and carry food. They are secretive burrowers and hoarders. Being nocturnal creatures, they usually sleep during the day and play and explore at night.

All pet hamsters are descended from a single female wild golden hamster found with a litter of 12 young in Syria in 1930. Inbreeding in humans significantly increases the chances of genetic defects, and is widely shunned. However, marrying aunts, uncles and cousins is still very common among European royal families - even the Queen of England and her husband Phillip are second cousins once removed.
