In ancient Egypt, trimming your eyebrows was a sign for bemoaning over a dead cat.

They also preserved their dead cats the way they mummified people. The Egyptians admired cats so much that if a human killed a feline, either willfully or accidentally, that human was condemned to death.

Due to the respect of cats, there were laws that defended the domesticated cat, and their lives were counted equal to the life of a human if not more absolute.
